In 1903, AC. Feber and Honig Mann embarked on an expedition to the Muztagh Pass from the Baltoro Glacier, driven by the imperative to survey the area in detail amidst concerns of potential Russian and Chinese incursions. The Chinese and Russian caravans had sought to traverse the Muztagh Pass at an altitude of 5,422 meters, envisioning a new trade route from North China to the Indian subcontinent. However, the arduous terrain and challenging conditions thwarted their efforts, rendering the passage impassable for extended periods.
Recognizing the geopolitical significance of the region, the British military initiated extensive surveying efforts in the Karakoram, driven by strategic considerations rather than purely scientific exploration. Despite the formidable challenges posed by the rugged landscape, the British surveyors demonstrated exceptional skill and determination, meticulously documenting the altitudes of peaks and passes throughout the Karakoram and beyond, leaving an indelible mark on the history of mountain exploration.
